Cozy Hot Chocolate Bombs

Hot chocolate bomb

With Fatima’s due date around the corner, we’re celebrating Christmas closer to home. One of the things I loved about last year’s Christmas, was the hot chocolate bombs I brought up to my parents’ house. This year I decided to try to make them from scratch so I could gift them to everyone in our family.

Our first cup of hot chocolate this season was the Friday right after Thanksgiving. In an effort to walk off all the macaroni and cheese, cornbread, and sweet potato pie, we took a long walk out in the cold. Immediately coming in, Fatima whipped up some hot chocolate with marshmallows. Our son wanted to play Zingo, so we played that and sipped on the cocoa. It was the nicest, coziest feeling.

Making the hot chocolate bombs

These hot chocolate bombs are pretty easy to make if you have the right stuff. Melting chocolate and hot cocoa mixes are easy to find, but you’ll also need half-sphere molds. It’s important to know how big you want to make these bombs. The first molds I bought were too small. I finally found a two and half inch set and those were perfect.

We made a very basic bomb filled with hot cocoa and marshmallows. We needed the practice and a basic framework for when we’re ready to mix in other things. Once you get past creating the chocolate spheres, the assembly is super easy.

Prep Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2.5" diameter half-sphere molds (link above)
  • Melting chocolate - white or dark and the opposite for decoration
  • 2 tbsp (per bomb) Hot chocolate mix - whichever is your favorite
  • Mini marshmallows

Instructions

1

Melt the chocolate according to the instructions.

2

Spoon melted chocolate into the sphere molds and brush around so there's a thin, but sturdy layer.

3

Pop the molds in the freezer for about 5 minutes or until the shells have hardened.

4

Spoon additional melted chocolate to plug up any holes and create a sturdy edge.

5

Remove the shells from the molds and pair up each half sphere.

6

In one of the spheres for each bomb, spoon in 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix. Use 2 tablespoons of mix per sphere.

7

Top off with marshmallows.

8

Use the empty spheres and lightly touch the edges to remaining melted chocolate. Quickly place on top of one of the spheres filled with cocoa mix and marshmallows. Repeat until all bombs have been assembled.

9

Place in the fridge to harden and seal the spheres.

10

Melt additional chocolate or use alternate-colored chocolate (i.e. if bombs are dark chocolate use white chocolate).

11

Drizzle the chocolate over each bomb for a finished look.

12

Garnish with toasted marshmallows, chocolate chips, festive sprinkles, or your favorite candy.

13

Add a bomb to a mug and pour boiled water or extremely hot milk over the bomb and watch it melt.

14

Give it a quick stir and enjoy!
