Winter Wreath DIY

December 18, 2019

Nothing says the holidays like a house decked out in decorations and Christmas music on full blast. But then the holidays are over and it all abruptly goes back into hiding—unless you’re my family and it’s Valentine’s Day before the last Christmas decoration is put away. However, this DIY Winter Wreath is here for you until the first day of spring—or until Memorial Day.

When I get inspired to do something, the itch doesn’t go away until I complete it. Maybe that’s why I love Legos. As a kid, I’d put together these huge castles in a matter of hours. On Christmas Day, I would block out the world and focus everything on building my latest Lego model. Now, I just collect boxes of Legos and will build them once my son is old enough to help and eventually lead the building efforts.

I had the itch to make these sweaters, this pumpkin wreath, and a lot of what you see on our blog. It even led to the creation of our Podcast. When I feel creative, I just follow what it tells me to do.

I saw the inspiration for this wreath on Pinterest in 2015. Since then, I’ve had a screenshot saved on my phone as a reminder. It took four years, but I finally made…two! Yes, after showing my mom the wreath, she requested one. Buyer beware, grapevine wreaths are hard to come by this time of year (#notsurprised). Finished wreaths sell on Etsy for $60-$80 and at that profit margin, I may jump into the business of selling them. I’ll keep you posted.

A Winter Wreath through February

The first wreath was a prototype. I learned what looked good, what I needed less of, and what I needed to add. The hardest part is layering the trees. You want them to look like a forest nesting inside the wreath, but not overdone. Layering gives them that 3D effect that they’re growing on the wreath. I suggest planning it out first and then glue then down. Start in the middle for the trees in the back, work your way to the left, the right, and then any trees upfront.

Once that was down, it still needed something else. I could see the glue holding the trees down and needed a way to hide that. I had extra moss from my pumpkin wreath and thought that could be the perfect filler. I glued parts of it, but really just stuck it into the wreath.

For the last step, I sprayed the wreath with glue and sprinkled mica flakes around. This is where I went a little overboard on the first wreath. You just need a touch because less really is more. And that’s the wreath! Let me know if you try it out yourself.
