Spider-Man Sugar Cookies

For Liam’s fourth birthday, he wanted to dress up as Spider-Man (aka Miles Morales). So our party theme was…Spider-Man! In addition to the cake, I made these Spider-Man sugar cookies.

I had grand plans for more colors and shapes, but they ultimately boiled down to Spider-Men Peter and Miles, and the number four. I couldn’t find time to make these farther in advance, so I made them the night before. I like to bake right up until the last minute because I think a whole day ahead spoils the baked goods – they just don’t taste as fresh.

I’ve decorated sugar cookies a few times. My favorites being Halloween 2019 and 2020 and Christmas. I need to make something once or twice before I get the hang of it. I like how these Spider-Man cookies came out, but I don’t love them. They could definitely be better. However, for my first attempt, I surprised myself.

Decorating the Spider-Man Sugar Cookies

When I started to plan out the cookies, I made these drawings to help guide me. I wanted to figure out what cookies I would make and what colors to use. Due to my limited tools, I need to plan out which colors to mix first. I only have so many bottles and bags!

Here are those plans:

I wanted to do more with the number four cookies, but I left them bare and with just a royal icing outline. I knew there were some people who don’t like royal icing and would appreciate just the cookie. I also stuck to three colors: white, red, and black. I wanted to use blue, but again, this was at 10pm the night before.

So I made the royal icing and mixed the colors. I followed my plans and started with red, then black, and then white. That seemed to work out for the most part. At one point a chunk of icing got stuck in the icing tip and the bottle opened and exploded all over my kitchen. I knew I needed to wrap up at that point.

My only takeaways are:

  • Get better at making flood icing. This was way too watery…and I was rushing.
  • Find better gel colors. The red gel color tasted really off, almost bitter.
  • More webs on the costumes. I needed to do a better job at doing more web lines on the costumes. The one Peter Parker cookie looks great. More lines.
  • This is still the best sugar cookie recipe to use – with or without icing.

Thank you for all the advice you left me on Instagram. I will try to switch up my technique!
