Every December, we scramble to find a cute or ugly Christmas sweater for a holiday party. It usually ends in a last-minute purchase with one we aren’t thrilled about. Since ugly sweaters became trendy, prices have gotten out of control. Last year, I searched for Mrs. Weasley sweaters. I was looking for something we could monogram with our initials (like in the film) not just an ‘H’ nor ‘R’. The only sweaters I could find could be personalized, but severely overpriced. I gave up.
Until Liam was born. While on parental leave over the summer, I needed to find a hobby during his naps and between my own naps. We knew our son would sleep A LOT (in the beginning), so I loaded up on books for those naps and all-nighters when all he wanted to do was sleep in our arms. I couldn’t turn into a couch potato. I also needed a break from reading and needed another mental stimulation. So, I researched how to DIY Mrs. Weasley sweaters.
However, I was not looking for an entire sweater to knit, I’ll leave that to our friend Kate. I needed something easier and more beginner-level. That’s when I turned to YouTube because where else do you go to when you need to figure something out? Lauren Fairweather has a perfect solution for anyone looking to make a Mrs. Weasley sweater but doesn’t know how to knit. Essentially, it’s through a duplicate stitch. Her video is so easy to follow. It took a few stitches to get through, but once I completed the first sweater, it took about an hour each for the remaining sweaters.
DIY Mrs. Weasley Sweaters for true Harry Potter fans
The hardest part was trying to find a Rib-knit sweater in the summer. And the hardest sweater to find? A rib-knit sweater for a baby. I had to go with a pearl-knit baby sweater and get creative with my stitching. That took the longest to make. I found the blue, red, and baby sweaters at H&M and my green one at ASOS.
I love how these Weasley sweaters turned out. They have that DIY made-with-love look that screams Molly Weasley. I wanted to give each person their House color, with the exception of Liam. He was going to rep Hufflepuff, but the colors didn’t quite match up. He just looks so cute in it.
I almost feel bad about showing these off so early because one of these is a Christmas gift! But with the holidays coming up so soon, I needed to show you a DIY way to make a Mrs. Weasley sweater. These would make a great gift for the Harry Potter fan in your life.
