DIY Maui Map Ornament

1 Mins read

It only took four years, but I finally got around to making a Maui map ornament! In 2017, my entire family flew out to Maui to celebrate my cousins’ wedding. It was the best two-week vacation we’ve had so far. Well, Cabo was also great…

Around Christmas 2017, I started to work on the ornament. The original map I brought back with me was waterproof! It made sense for the island to give out waterproof maps, but it wasn’t helpful for making the ornament. The mod podge was not sticking to the pieces of the map. I thought I was at a dead-end, but Amazon came through with some maps of Maui.

Crafting the Maui map ornament

While it’s been a few years since I made a map ornament, this was a really easy DIY project to get back into. From picking and cutting out map pieces to mod podging them to the ornament, this one took me about 30 minutes to complete!

When you’re making this ornament, I suggest you cut out all your favorite spots first. They’re preferably smaller areas, but they can be bigger ones, too. The idea is you’ll use other pieces of the map to make a base layer and then adhere the ‘favorite spots’ on top so they’re all visible!

Supplies

  • Glass ornament
  • Paint Brush
  • Mod Podge
  • Maps from your favorite places

Directions

  1. Look at your maps and find areas that you want to cut out.
  2. Cut out small circular pieces of the areas you want on your ornament.
  3. Brush Mod Podge on the back of a piece of map you cut out.
  4. Place on the glass ornament and press down so it adheres to the ornament. Some pieces will crinkle and fold over – this is ok. The ornament is a sphere, this will happen.
  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until your ornament is complete.
  6. Once the ornament is dry, apply a thin coat of mod podge on the outside of the ornament to seal it up.
  7. Let dry overnight.
