Don’t throw away your maps from all the traveling you’ve done. Do this instead. This DIY project will take you 20 minutes. It’s perfect for a special gift throughout the year or for Christmas because these DIY Map Ornaments can be personalized for anyone and any adventure. 10 years ago, I made our first map Christmas ornament reflecting our honeymoon to Martha’s Vineyard. Over the last decade, our map ornament collection has grown into a wonderful reflection of all the fun places we’ve visited.
Last year, I added a map ornament of Walt Disney World to our collection (the one featured in our how-to video below). That was our first big family vacation with the kids, and it was the most magical.
Our map Christmas ornament collection includes: Martha’s Vineyard, New York City, Maui, Disney World, Universal Orlando, Lake Winnipesaukee, London, and Nice.
Making the Map Christmas Ornaments
You only need a few things to make these ornaments: glass or plastic ornaments, a paint brush, mod podge, and maps from your favorite places! One of the maps from Cabo was water proof and the mod podge didn’t take well to the map. If you are planning your trips, pick up a few maps! If you have a bunch of maps already, test a small piece of the map before cutting it up. Real time thought: a collage map of all the places you’ve been! Mix all the places you’ve been to in a year and make one ornament — now i’m jealous of that thought, hahaha!

DIY Map Ornaments
Supplies
- Glass ornaments
- Paint Brush
- Mod Podge
- Maps from your favorite places
Directions
- Look at your maps and identify areas that you want to cut out.
- Cut out circular pieces of the areas you want on your ornament.
- Brush Mod Podge on the back of a piece you cut out.
- Place on the glass ornament and press down so it adheres to the ornament. Some pieces will crinkle and fold over – this is ok. The ornament is a sphere, this will happen.
- Repeat steps 3 & 4 until your ornament is complete.
- Once the ornament is dry, apply a thin coat of mod podge on the outside of the ornament to seal it up.
