I love that my kids love the fun and cooky crafts I give them. We try to do crafts all year, but spooky season gives us a special opportunity to get crafty. This weekend, we made these Halloween suncatchers.
Growing up, I lived for the holiday window stickers. When Autumn began, I loved going to the store to pick out a new Halloween-themed sticker sheet. When we would take out all the Halloween stuff, I would locate the stickers, take my favorites, and stick them on my window.
With some crepe paper, foam sheets, and contact paper, you can make any themed suncatcher you want (with the right accessories)! In this how-to, we’re showing you how we make jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, and monsters.
Halloween Suncatchers
Our oldest had a lot of fun with these. My youngest had a lot of fun sticking the crepe paper, too! I helped to finish the project with a few tricky cuts, but all-in-all, it was a successful crafty afternoon!
Supplies
- Contact paper
- Colorful crepe paper (depending on your spooky character, check for the right colors)
- White crepe paper (ghosts)
- Googly eyes (monsters)
- Construction paper (black paper for ghosts and jack-o-lantern faces)
- Foam paper (coordinate colors with crepe paper for all)
Directions
- Cut your colorful crepe into 1/2″ or 1″ squares. These do not need to be perfect. For ghosts, we used white, orange for pumpkins, purple and green for monsters.
- Cut contact paper into 5×7″ rectangles. I started with tall rectangles, but start with a shape that works best for you.
- On the clear side of the contact paper, apply strong tape like packing tape, and stick directly to your work surface. Peel the back off and the surface should be sticky.
- For jack-o-lanterns, cut eyes, nose, and mouth out from black construction paper. Place the face on the contact paper. Begin sticking orange crepe paper to the sticky contact paper until all the sticky surface has been covered.
- For ghosts, cut eyes and mouth our from black construction paper. Place the face on the contact paper. Begin sticking white crepe paper to the sticky contact paper until all the sticky surface has been covered.
- For monsters, begin sticking crepe paper to the sticky surface until all the sticky side has been covered. Later, we’ll use the googly eyes!
- After all the sheets have been filled with crepe paper, gently but firmly, remove the contact paper from the work surface and the tape from the contact paper.
- Using foam sheets, cut out shapes (pumpkin, ghosts, or rectangles for monsters). Then cut inside of those shapes out so you are left with a boarder of a shape.
- Remove the backing to the foam sheets and stick to the contact paper.
- Cut the excess contact paper off.
- If you made, ghosts, then you’re done.
- For pumpkins, cut brown foam out for stems.
- For monsters, stick googly eyes directly to the front of the suncatcher.
- Now have some fun Halloween suncatchers!
