When Liam and I started Liam’s Train Time a year and a half ago, I did not expect it go anywhere (as it was meant to be a creative ‘just-for-fun’ channel). Today, we have over 6 million views! By the time, we went to celebrate our 10k subscriber milestone, we were well over 13k subscribers.
If you’re not familiar with Liam’s Train Time, it’s a family-friendly YouTube channel to show off Liam’s track layouts, train toys, and other things he loves. We work together through the build, problem solve through some roadblocks, and have a ton of fun throughout the episode. As parent watching Liam discover and be fed garbage videos on the platform, I wanted to make sure we were putting out the kind of content I would prefer Liam to watch. Something a little calmer and less chaotic.
One day, Liam asked if he could make a YouTube channel. And I said, “What do you want to do?” He explained his concept: show everyone his trains. And that’s how it started.
Growing Liam’s Train Time
Today, we’re trying to balance our growth while still having fun. We may need a mic here or there to sound better, or think more strategically about the thumbnails. And through the whole process, Liam gets to learn more about production and editing. For now, I leave the brainstorming episode concepts to Liam, and then I go in and layer with a little strategy on the rollout.
What I love about this channel, is we have fun. I get to teach Liam a little bit about the production process, while I get to continue working on my editing skills. I have built in thumbnail focus groups with Liam and Blair, and their cousins. Ultimately, Liam is the one to say whether or not the camera is rolling–and if the channel continues.
Although we just celebrated 10k subscribers, Liam already has his eyes set on 50k. I advocated for a 100k goal, but Liam gave me a good argument for 50k, so we agreed on that. We’ve found our stride, elevated our branding, and found thousands of people along the way who love watching what we’re doing.
If you’ve been part of our community, THANK YOU for watching. If you’re new, check out the channel, give your favorite video a like, and make sure to subscribe!
