At our son’s first vaccine-free appointment last month (yay), we discussed his milestones and food plan. The doctor praised how well he was growing. She asked about all the food he was eating and specifically asked whether we introduced any diary to him. At the time we hadn’t given him any dairy products. She mentioned how important it was to create a more balanced meal now that he’s shifting to a more solid food-based diet.

I have noticed he loves eating solids during the day and mostly nurses in the morning and at night. Being the new parents that we are, when we got home later that day we did more research. I turned to our Real Baby Food cookbook for some ideas. There was this beautiful picture of Greek yogurt with pureed beets and dill that caught my eye. Now, I hate beets on their own, but looking at this photo I was wanted to try some.
You’ll want to eat some of this beets and dill yogurt.
Our moms love beets. I can remember my mom always mentioning how they stain your hands and everything they touch. I didn’t want to go through the hassle of prepping fresh beets especially if Liam ended up hating it. So, I turned to the baby food aisle. Brian and I really love the organic baby food called Happy Baby. The ingredients are fresh and natural. Unlike some baby food that’s watered down, this consistency is thicker and more appealing. I was not able to find just beets, but I found something better. We got a beets, banana and black bean mixture to pair with Fage plain Greek yogurt. We noticed there was baby yogurt option from a different brand, but in comparing the nutrition, there’s more added sugar. This is why we love making our own baby food.
This is a great snack to have, especially when your baby is teething. The cool yogurt helps their gums. Our son loves his teething crackers and snacks, but this is great substitute that has more nutritional value. Not only do you soothe gums, your kids get good food, and you’re introducing new flavors and textures. He has been teething since August and we’re so happy to finally see teeth!
The only time I had beets was in smoothies throughout my pregnancy. Beet are known to help prevent many birth defects. Maybe that’s why he likes the taste because he was exposed to them for 8 months!
Brian and I are lucky to have a baby with a sophisticated palette. For those that are keeping your babies vegan, look out for a tofu yogurt recipe soon!
