I always looked forward to Christmas day with my extended family because it meant a box of homemade Chex mix from my aunt Linda was waiting for us. We celebrate Christmas with my mom’s side of the family on Christmas Eve and my dad’s side on Christmas Day. My aunt Jean usually hosts Christmas Day, so all of the non-locals ship their packages to her house. My aunt Linda, who lived in the south would send a box or three filled with tins of her holiday Chex mix for everyone.
She passed away a few years ago and there’s not a day where I don’t think about her hugs and Chex mix. Since then, someone in our family conjures up a batch of Chex mix to share with everyone. This year, we decided to tackle that challenge and gift a batch of homemade Chex mix. I’ve been in the same kitchen with aunt Linda only once when she was making her Chex mix. And I’ve come across her written recipe only a few times and never remember to take a picture of it. Aunt Linda usually included some kind of powdered cheese-flavored chip. I left it out of this batch in favor of some other goodies. However, I left all the basics and threw in a few twists of my own.
Holiday Chex Mix all year round.
For me, Chex Mix is the ultimate savory snack. I love making it from scratch because it fills our home up with the most amazing smell. I wish someone made a Chex mix candle; I’d burn that all the time. When we made our pumpkin spice Chex mix a few years ago, our home smelled amazing. It was like living in a pumpkin spice latte.
While we’ve been making this Chex mix for many years (via the oven or crockpot), I realized I never left a post here. Once you have the basics, you can layer in sweet elements like M&Ms (the red and green M&Ms make this a holiday Chex mix). You can use any kind of cereal you want! I’ve used Cheerios, different types of Chex, and Golden Grahams.
Holiday Chex Mix
What makes this Chex Mix fit for the holidays is part tradition and part Christmas-colored m&ms.
Ingredients
- 3 cups corn Chex
- 3 cups rice Chex
- 2 cups whole wheat Chex
- 1 cup Golden Grahams
- 2 cups mixed nuts
- 2 cups bite-sized pretzels
- 1 cup everything-flavored bagel chips
- 1 cup Gardetto's rye chips
- 14 tbsp (1 3/4 sticks) butter, melted
- 5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp truffle seasoned salt (or just do 2 tsp kosher salt)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 3/4 tsp onion powder
- 10 oz (1 bag) of holiday-colored M&Ms to add in at the end
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
In the largest bowl you have available, mix together all Chex cereals, Golden Grahams, nits, pretzels, bagel chips, and rye chips.
In a smaller bowl, mix together butter, Worcestershire sauce, salts, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Pour liquid over the Chex mix.
Gently stir so everything is evenly coated (as much as possible). Do this for about 5 minutes.
Place in a large dutch oven, baking dish, or on a few cookie sheets and place in the oven.
Bake for 1 hour and stir every 15-20 minutes.
Remove from the oven and spread over paper towels to absorb any excess liquid.
Cool completely before storing in airtight containers.
