Garden Thyme: Halloween Beer Garden

Here’s what you’ll find in this post:

  • A fun Halloween beer garden setup using our backyard garden space
  • Easy DIY decor and supply list (bloody tablecloths, skeletons, lights)
  • How we made it interactive with beer tastings and pong
  • Seasonal beer recs from our party, including Roadsmary’s Baby
  • Tips to keep guests warm and the party going all night

With winter on the way, that can mean one thing—most of my garden has been harvested! Right now, the only things holding on are my brussels sprouts and kale. Those two thrive in the cold and should be ready to harvest just in time for Thanksgiving.

So, what do you do with an empty garden in October? You turn it into a Halloween Beer Garden, obviously.

At our annual Marquis Monster Mash, I wanted to do something new for our guests. The garden beds were already cleared, so instead of letting that space go to waste, I threw down some hay, strung up lights, dragged in a skeleton or two, and called it the Halloween beer garden.

We asked guests to BYO beer—whatever they were into: pumpkin ales, IPAs, porters, or anything new they were excited to try. We set up a tasting station with chalkboard signs so people could label their beers and share notes. Nothing too serious. Just a casual “try this one, it tastes like a cinnamon donut” kind of vibe.

Beer Pong

The beer garden was a hit. People popped in and out all night. Pong was the surprise MVP of the evening, bringing new people into the space constantly. And the tastings gave everyone an excuse to stop by—even if they weren’t big beer drinkers.

A few standouts from the night:

  • Roadsmary’s Baby (a rum-barrel-aged pumpkin ale my mom brought—very good)
  • Night Owl from Elysian
  • A local Oktoberfest brew someone picked up last-minute that ended up being one of the most popular

When it got cold—and it did—we had two solid options:

  1. Head to the bonfire to warm up
  2. Grab another tasting pour and keep chatting

Both worked.

If you’re throwing a Halloween party and looking for something different (and easy) to set up outdoors, this is it. Turning your yard or garden into a little beer garden doesn’t require much, and it’s a great way to keep the party flowing—literally.
