These sweet and sour tofu sticks were a hit with our finger-food-loving baby and turned out to be a flavorful, protein-rich snack for the whole family.

  • Perfect for babies who prefer feeding themselves and are ready for finger foods
  • A tasty meat-free option made with extra firm tofu, soy sauce, and maple syrup
  • Easy to prep with pantry staples and no need for complicated ingredients
  • A great way to introduce bold flavors like sweet and savory into your baby’s diet
  • Adults will want to sneak a few too—these make a great salad topper or snack

We are now in the world of finger food! Our son would rather feed himself with his hands than have us feed him with a spoon. This mama is not complaining. Often times, he grabs the spoon from our hands and embarrassingly misses his mouth. We’ve been giving him mini baby cereal crackers and it’s the cutest thing to watch him position his fingers to pick them up. But we wanted to mix up his finger food with something different. So we tried out these sweet and sour tofu sticks.

I try everything before feeding my son. Including these sweet and sour tofu sticks.

We haven’t given our son any meat because the idea of pureed meat makes me nauseous. I try everything I feed him and I refuse to eat pureed meat, so I’m not making it. I was on the search of a great alternative source for protein and that’s when I found tofu. Tofu is a great source of protein and the more firm it is, the higher the protein and iron content. This recipe calls for extra firm tofu. I incorrectly used only firm tofu and it still worked, but it was little more delicate than I would have liked.

I was excited to introduce more flavors to his diet. The combination of sweet from the maple syrup and savory from the soy sauce was the great balance. When Brian told his coworkers about these sweet and sour tofu sticks they wanted to try it. The book recommends adding this to a salad or having it as a snack. This snack was perfect for us to make because we had 99% of the ingredients in our cabinets already.

My only regret is not using the extra firm tofu. I should have let the tofu marinate longer in the soy mixture, too (I didn’t let it marinade at all). They still tasted great, but I think it would have been even more flavorful. Our son was a fan and I will definitely make these again.

Description

These sweet and sour tofu sticks are a flavorful, plant-based finger food made with maple syrup and soy sauce, perfect for babies and surprisingly addictive for adults.

Ingredients

  • 1lb extra firm tofu, drained
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Line plate with paper towel and place tofu on top and line with additional paper towel.
  2. Place a plate on top and weigh down with any canned food you have. You want to drain as much liquid from the tofu as possible.
  3. Let it set for at least 20 minutes.
  4. Once drained, cut the tofu into about 12 sticks and lay flat on a baking dish.
  5. In a small bowl, combine all your ingredients and pour over the tofu.
  6. Lets it marinade for an hour.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  8. Place tofu stick on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Let cool and serve.
