Spider-Man Cake Toppers

Spider-Man Cake Toppers

For Liam’s fourth birthday, he wanted to be Spider-Man. Specifically calling out he wanted to be ‘Spin’ (aka Miles Morales) and that “daddy would be Spidey (aka Peter Parker). I told him that was a great idea, so we went all out. To theme the cake, I made these Spider-Man cake toppers.

For his cake, I kept it basic. Liam wanted a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Boxed cake mix for the win. I love using boxed cake mix. I am not here for the boxed cake mix haters, y’all can leave. If you have the time, you can elevate a boxed cake by making it taste more like a bakery cake. However, I made the buttercream from scratch. I would normally just try to use frosting from a can, but I find them all too soft. I needed the frosting to be stiff enough to hold up the cake toppers.

Below I wrote out how I made these party hats, but be sure to check out the video, too! Here’s where I got my costume.

Spider-Man Cake Toppers

The only part of these Spider-Man cake toppers I made were the hats. Like we did for his first birthday, I just decorated my son’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends action figures with party hats. This is my favorite thing to do, and I’ll do this every three or so years, haha.

Supplies

  • Figurines – If you’re in the market for these Spider-Man toys, I got them from Target. But I love these updated ones – they’re the same ones from Target, but you can lift up the masks! Otherwise use any figures you want! We used animals and now these action figures.
  • Glue Gun
  • Card stock – picked up this small book of different patterned card stock at Michaels. I couldn’t find them online.
  • Mini pompoms
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Instructions

  1.  In order to make these hats, you need to cut out a stencil. The stencil I made looks like a wide triangle. At the bottom, the widest part, the line is curved outward. At the top, an inward notch.
  2. Cut this out of the stock and trace/cut it out for as many hats as you’re going to make.
  3. Roll the stencil into a hat. The inward notch a the top is the pointy part of the party hat. The wide bottom will sit on the head of the figures.
  4. Tape the seam to secure the hat.
  5. Glue the mini pompom at the top of the pointy hat.
  6. Try the hats on the figures to see how they fit, make any adjustments, and find the right position.
  7. Glue the hats to the figures.

It’s that easy! Let me know if you decide to make these little hats for Spider-Man cake toppers or other figures!
