One of my go-to comfort foods is steak and cheese. It’s the best hearty meal to have for dinner on a cold night. As we flipped through Cravings: Hungry for More, we came across this Philly French Dip Sandwiches recipe. The picture of the sandwiches in the cookbook looked so yummy we had to try them!
What is French dip anyway? According to Food & Wine, it’s not even French! Who invented it is still up for debate, however, this American favorite came from Los Angeles. The sandwich is made of thinly sliced beef set on French bread. You eat the sandwich by first dipping it in a hearty jus (French for: a thin gravy or sauce made from meat juices). Cheese is optional, however, Chrissy provides us a delicious sauce to dip or drizzle on the sandwich.

Making the Philly French Dip Sandwiches
What I love about these Philly French Dip Sandwiches is the jus is dripped on the bread and the meat. The cheese sauce is what you dip this sandwich in and it’s the perfect companion. This is truly a “30-minute meal,” one that you can whip up after a quick trip to the grocery store.
After making this recipe over three times by now, the cheese sauce continues to be the more difficult part of this recipe. Once it’s made, we set it aside to stay warm and then heat it up before serving. However, in between setting it aside and heating it back up, it starts to harden and congeal. Once it warms back up, it doesn’t quite heat up the same. On the last time we made these sandwiches, we made the cheese sauce last–that was the best thing to do.
The Philly French Dip Sandwiches are so flavorful. The jus is perfectly splashed all over the bread, beef, and onions. And the cheese sauce, it’s just melted American cheese with a touch of cayenne pepper, but it tastes so good on the sandwich. If you’re looking for a meal to hit the spot this fall, try it out!
