Mother’s Day

2 Mins read

Today’s Throw back Thursday highlights the delicious breakfast Fatima and I made for my mom for Mother’s Day.  All she wanted to do for her day was to 1.) have a great breakfast 2.) go for a bike ride and 3.) spend the afternoon at one of our town’s vineyards.  Who better to make your breakfast than Fatima and me?

French Toast

The day before – grocery shopping.  My mom had only a few requests for breakfast – french toast, fruit, and eggs.  We threw in some cinnamon rolls, too.  I love french toast, I mean who doesn’t?  I’m not just talking about opening up your sandwich bread, throwing it into some egg mixture and onto a skillet.  I’m talking about french toast – the dried-out bread french toast.

In high school, I went on a field trip to a french restaurant with my french class.  There, I learned the “secret” to making a great dish of french toast.  All I needed to do was to leave my bread out the day before and let it dry out.

While looking around at the grocery store, Fatima and I scoured the bakery for a nice healthy loaf of bread.  We would cut it up and let it sit out all night.  We also wanted to try out a new egg mixture.  I’m sick of the egg, milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg mixture I always make.  I wanted to deviate and try something new, but didn’t want to get too crazy.  Enter the help of Martha.

We picked up some strawberries, grapes, melon, eggs, and cinnamon rolls – along with the bread.  When we got home, I took out the bread and cut it up, placed it on wire racks and placed it on top of the fridge to start drying it out.

Sunday morning, Mother’s Day.  Using the Martha Stewart egg mixture for the bread, I poured it over the bread in a deep dish, allowing them to soak.

Fatima cut open the melon, scooped it out, cut a beautiful design and filled it back up with a mixture of fruit.

Pillsbury cinnamon rolls – nuff said.

I melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and dunked strawberries into the chocolate.

And the french toast – it was delicious!

Breakfast was delicious!  Simple and full of flavor.  To work off the delicious breakfast, I took a wonderful bike ride around our town with Mom.

And then, as promised, finished the day at a Vineyard.

Wine

This was our first time at Paradise Hills, it’s the 2nd Vineyard to open up publicly in our town.  Verdict – although I prefer the atmosphere of the “other” vineyard, the wine at Paradise Hills is not too bad.

It was a great day.  Great breakfast, great day for biking, and a great day with my mom.  Oh and she loves taking selfies for her instagram…
