Thirty, flirty, and sleep-deprived. This week, Fatima and I say goodbye to our twenties and enter a new decade. I can’t say I’m not apprehensive about turning 30, but age is just a number, right? Fatima’s been wanting to try out grapefruit margaritas, so we’re celebrating this week with a whole tray of them.
I don’t enjoy grapefruit on its own, however, Fatima said she’d snack on grapefruit sprinkled with sugar as a kid. At Liam’s first birthday, we had grapefruit-rosemary infused water. I added pineapple to add sweetness. So when we were trying out a few variations of these grapefruit margaritas, I added something sweet to cut the tart acid.
I’ll take my own pitcher of these grapefruit margaritas.
We can’t wait until we turn 18. Then 21. I loved each birthday in my twenties. When I turned 29, I didn’t really think about it being the last year of my twenties, likely due to my son taking up any free brain space I had. But when the summer arrived, I started to get anxious. Not because I was scared, but everyone around me kept saying, “Oooo someone’s going to be thirty,” as if it were a bad thing.
My birthday came and went. We had an excellent dinner at our favorite margarita place, Cascabel Taqueria. Tried a new flavor, pomegranate hibiscus, and ended with our favorite, a water-melon basil margarita. Now I’m on day one of thirty and counting down until Fatima joins the 30 club on Friday. She’s been teasing me for all this time, but last night, I think I started to see a little anxiety peek through. Now it’s her turn.
This summer, we’ve been on a mission to find new margarita flavors. Our classic, tried-and-true Marquisrita is great, but it’s great to have a little flavor. So, we tried out Peach, Peach-Basil, and Cucumber margaritas. To gear up for fall, I knew we had to add grapefruit margaritas to the top of the list (and make Fatima happy).
I kept that grapefruit-rosemary water in mind. The combo worked so well together in water, so I wanted to see how it would translate over to a margarita. Grapefruit rosemary combination is not a new idea. However, it’s made with the Marquisrita motto: taste the tequila. We broiled some grapefruit slices to be used as garnish, and they added a lot of smokey, sugary flavor to the drink, too.
