Liam is nosy. If it moves, makes noise, stands still, is colorful, lacking color, or not visible to the naked eye, he stares at it. He even has conversations with things around the house, like our shiny doorknobs and the corners of any room. Once his sight began to expand and his focus developed, we knew we needed to give him a mobile to focus his attention. However, every mobile we wanted was at least $80. So I made this baby mobile.
As a new parent, there are things you splurge on like a safe car seat and smart bassinets. And then there are things you have to make yourself. A baby mobile is one of those things you should just make yourself. We tried to find one we liked that didn’t cost $80. It seemed impossible. Apparently whimsical, woodland-themed aesthetics are “in.” A mobile is important because it helps your baby learn to focus their eyes and even calm them in the crib.
Since babies can’t see in full color until about 5 months, we opted for bold, contrasting colors. We loved the idea of making a nighttime scene with felt plush objects. After searching Etsy, I came across a string of stars and the cutest little moon from two different sellers. They had the handmade look we were looking for and the color scheme we wanted.
The stars came strung together on a white cord. I was going to repurpose the string to hang the stars, but after putting it together, I did not want to see strings. So I used clear line and love the way it looks. The stars and moon look like they’re floating above Liam.
DIY Starry Night Baby Mobile
Supplies:
- Felt plush objects of your choosing (We found our Moon and Stars on Etsy)
- Clear Line
- 9-inch embroidery hoop
- Scissors
- Ceiling Hooks
- Yarn
Directions
- Using the clear line, thread your felt plush objects through one end and tie a knot. Leave the string long and the same size (for now).
- Open the embroidery hoop and measure the circumference of the inner hoop. Take that number and divide by how many objects you have (I used 6 stars and 1 moon = 7 objects). This is going to be the space between your felt objects. I ended up with 4 inches and change between each line.
- Using a pencil, make a line for your first object.
- Measure to where the next line will be (using the number you came up with) and mark it off. Continue to do this until you have all of your lines marked.
- Figure out how long you want your longest object to be and tape it to the outside of the inner hoop on one of the lines you penciled off.
- For the remaining objects, I wanted the next object to be just above its neighbor.
- Measure out the remaining objects and tape them to the inner hoop on the lines you penciled off.
- Put the outer hoop back on and screw it together securely.
- Using yarn tie four strings evenly spaced on the hoop. Bring the ends together above the hoop and tie a loop. When you pick it up it should hang level. If not, slide the yarn (attached to the hoop) around to level it out.
- Secure the baby mobile above your baby’s bassinet or crib.
