So you’re thinking about getting a Peloton bike? Did you already order one? Now what? I love our Peloton bike. I’ve been on a 90+ week streak (at least one ride every week). When we bought ours, I wished I had a guide to give me some more insight into what I’d need beyond the bike. So here’s what we we found helpful so far.
We ordered this bike in March 2020 right as the world began to shut down due to covid. I had been eyeing the bike for a few months and the lockdown seemed like the perfect opportunity to purchase one. I have no regrets, except for a few accessories. If I didn’t have the bike for some of those strict lockdowns, I’m not sure what I would have done. It allowed us to stay inside and stay active.
Recommendations
My first recommendation for the bike is this: don’t order one unless you actually like biking. You may get bored really fast, so take that into consideration. I’ve loved all the trainers, but some of my go-tos are Robin, Alex, Ben, and Christine.

Peloton Accessories
When we purchased the bike, we got the shoes, headphones, heart rate monitors, weights, water bottles, and the mat. Not all of it was worth it.
- Floor mat – worth it!
- Shoes – easier to just get them through Peloton.
- Weights – go for the highest weight (3lb) or purchase a heavier weight somewhere else.
- To save $100 off the family cost, you don’t need: headphones, water bottles, heart rate monitor
- The headphones that you can buy with the bike are crap. Since I stopped using them and started using my AirPods, I love biking with wireless headphones. Wires always got in the way.
- Find a water bottle you can sip while riding. The bottles we got with our purchase are awful and not conducive for biking and hydrating. However, it looks the bottles you get now are great!
- You don’t need the heart rate monitor unless you 1. don’t have a smartwatch to track your workouts or 2. really want to see your heart rate match up with your calories. We don’t use ours anymore because it was a production to get it on and to keep it working with a fresh battery.
Accessories to Consider
- Padded Bike Shorts – I needed these for the first month as I got used to riding the bike so often.
- Bike Seat Cushion – Another great purchase for new riders. We’ve tried a few and this one is more comfortable and seems to be holding up much better between washes.
- Towels – I sweat if I even think about the summer. Get a towel that can easily hang from your bike for easy access. These are soft and absorb a lot of sweat.
- Heavier weights – I purchased these 6lb weights and they fit on the bike. I like the 3lb weights, but I’ve been in need of a slightly heavier weight for the arms + cycling classes.
Favorite Peloton Apparel
- Yeti water bottle – I don’t use this during a ride, it’s just my every day water bottle. But I love how cold it keeps my water.
- Tote bag – when these are in stock, they are worth the spend. They’re so spacious. We have one in our car for all our car crap and one by the bike to keep our shoes, yoga mat, and extra weights.
- Rise Shorts by Peloton/Four Laps – my favorite shorts when they’re in stock.
- Rhone’s Reign Long Sleeve – best long sleeve shirt I’ve loved from them
