Easy Valentine’s Day Paper Heart Chain Craft for Kids (A Fun Family Activity!)

2 Mins read

Valentine’s Day is this week, and we’re already buzzing with excitement over here. Since our snow day last week, my kids, especially, love getting crafty for the holidays, and this year, we’ve discovered the perfect project: a Valentine’s Day heart chain craft! It’s super simple. Even my littlest one helped. The results are so festive and sweet. We’ve already hung a few around the house, and they add such a cheerful touch. Plus, it’s a great way to spend some quality time together as a family.

This Valentine’s Day heart chain craft is a winner for a few reasons. First, you probably already have all the supplies you need. Second, it’s easy enough for kids aged ~6-10 (and even younger with a little help) to do mostly on their own. And third, it’s totally customizable! You can use any colors you like and make your chain as long or short as you want. We stuck with red, pink, and white. You can even go monochromatic or even more colorful!

What You’ll Need for Your Paper Heart Chain

Get all of your supplies and more right here!

  • Pink, Red, and White construction paper (or any colors you love!)
  • Scissors (kid-safe ones are a must!)
  • Stapler

Let’s Get Crafty! (Step-by-Step Instructions)

  1. Prep the Paper: Along the short side of your construction paper, cut 1/2 inch strips. You’ll want to cut several strips from each color. Mixing and matching colors makes the chain extra fun!
  2. Make the First Heart: Grab a strip of paper and fold it in half, like you’re folding a hamburger. This creates a “V” shape. Now, bend the two sides of the “V” inwards towards the middle, but don’t fold them sharply. This will give you the top curves of a heart. Staple the paper together about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above where the points meet. Ta-da! You’ve got your first heart!
  3. Link the Hearts: Now, pick another strip of paper (a different color looks great!). Fold it in half just like before. This time, before you shape the heart, slip one side of this folded strip through the first heart you already made.
  4. Form and Staple: Bend the sides of the new strip inwards to form the heart shape, just like you did for the first one. Staple it together. You’ve now got two interlocked hearts!
  5. Repeat and Create: Keep going! Pick another strip, fold, link it through the last heart, shape, and staple. Repeat these steps until your chain is as long as you want. My kids love seeing how long they can make theirs!

Tips and Tricks for Heart Chain Success

  • Let your kids choose their own color combinations. It’s their craft, after all!
  • If your kids are younger, adults will need to do the stapling.
  • For a fun variation, you can add glitter, stickers, or other embellishments to your hearts.
  • These heart chains look amazing hanging from the ceiling, draped across a mantel, or even used to decorate a Valentine’s Day card.
