I just had my wisdom teeth removed. On the oral surgery scale, it’s like the least troublesome. But any small disruption in my daily routine is like the end of the world haha. I knew that I’d be limited to certain foods in recovery, so I planned my surgery in an off time of the year; between holidays and right before summer. Once I got through the first few days, I turned to our blog for some soft-food recipes to get me through post-op.
Eight years ago, the surgeon didn’t want to touch my wisdom teeth because they thought the teeth were sitting on a nerve supplying all the feeling to my face. After hearing that, I wouldn’t want them taken out either. Thankfully, I just needed two wisdom teeth taken out. One of them kept popping up to say hello and would get swallowed back into my gums. This went on for years. Until it’s presence was made permanent, but only partially.
Due to some upgraded technology, a 3-D scanner, and a second opinion, my new dental surgeon saw that my teeth were safe to extract.
Food for Post Oral Surgery – Wisdom Teeth Edition!
I was so nervous heading into this appointment. My wife was so lucky to have had this done eight years before…and without kids! If you can get this done in your twenties without kids, do it! Luckily, my wife is a supermom and took the kids solo for the first few days post-op. In my first day, I only ate applesauce. I was swollen and too afraid to eat anything else. Day 2 rolled around and I added pudding into the mix. However, by the third day, I needed something more. I added in smoothies and mashed potatoes. I was craving bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwiches, french toast, cookies, and so many other solid foods I couldn’t have quite yet. So I leaned on Lilies and Loafers for inspiration.
Here are some semi-solid and soft foods to eat after a dental extraction. As always, consult your doctor and post-op instructions before creating your meal plan.
Kale Smoothie
This kale smoothie is so good. It’s our go-to smoothie during the week.
Mashed Potatoes
One of the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever had. I left out the green onions.
Black Bean Soup
You’re advised to avoid hot and spicy food for some time after oral surgery. I started eating this black bean soup a few days into recovery. I went a step further and pureed it…
Roasted Butternut Squash
I’ll take this roasted garlic butternut squash at anytime of the year.
Mashed sweet potatoes
Or substitute squash for sweet potatoes and mash them up!
Tomato Soup
Dental surgery or not, this tomato soup will warm your soul.
Pink Pasta
One of our favorite pasta recipes from Cravings.
Mac and Cheese
I was a little skeptical when I started eating mac and cheese, I thought it was tougher than I was expecting. Definitely worth adding to your list, but wait until you’re closer to week 2 at least. Pick around them or leave out the parmesan bread crumbs.
After your first week, if you’re feeling adventurous, try some french toast!
Banana Pudding
After a week or two (and if you’re sick of vanilla pudding, try making Magnolia Bakery’s Banana Pudding.
