When we asked Liam what he wanted to do for his birthday, he said he wanted to dress up as Spider-Man. Not just any Spider-Man, he wanted to be Miles Morales, aka ‘Spin’ from Spidey and His Amazing Friends. I loved that idea, so Fatima and I dove right into it.

For Christmas, we gifted him a set of action figures from Spidey and His Amazing Friends. We hadn’t watched it until after he received the toys, so I’m not sure how he got into Spider-Man, but he loves it.
Not only did he want to dress up, he told me I was going to be Peter Parker. He let mommy and Blair dress up in whatever they wanted, but I had to be Peter Parker. Why argue with an almost four-year-old, right?
We kept his birthday small. A cake, some appetizers, cookies, and simple decorations. Balloons go a long way!
Decorations
- Spider-Man balloon (Party City)
- Red, black, and blue balloons
- Number four foil balloon
- Spider-Man plates and napkins
- Letter board
From his first birthday, we learnt that balloons can go a long way to help fill up a space. Our general color scheme was red, black, and blue; the different colors from each costume. White balloons would have looked like a Fourth of July! So we stuck with some balloons, a Spider-Man balloon, and themed plates and napkins. A simple setup that had high impact.
Cake Toppers
- Spidey and His Amazing Friends action toys at Amazon or Target
- Number 4 candle

These cake toppers were really easy to make. We made similar cake toppers for Liam’s first birthday and I knew these little party hats would be perfect for this birthday.
Sugar Cookies
See our full post on the cookies!
In addition to the cake, I made these Spider-Man sugar cookies. Did I need to make them? No. I wanted to. Over the last few years, I’ve been practicing my royal icing skills. But I’m only decorating Halloween or Christmas cookies. Liam’s birthday gave me the opportunity to try something new.
It takes me one or two times to get the hang of decorating cookies. Clearly this is my first time, so I have high hopes for round two (TBD)! On the next go-around and in all future cookie decorating, I need to find different coloring gels for royal icing. Specifically the red tasted very bitter.
Costumes
The moment you’ve been waiting for, the costumes. The minute Liam told us he wanted to dress up like Spider-Man, I searched all over for a Miles Morales costume. He’s a slim kid, so it was tough to find a size for him that fit well. Then I needed to find a costume for myself. Since these costumes are not exactly Marvel branded, it was difficult trying to find a costume that looked not like a total knockoff. I love this costume. The colors are great, it gives me Tobey Maguire Spider-Man throwback, and it looks pretty good.
For Blair, we found these adorable Marvel onesies. Liam wanted Blair to wear the Hulk one because it made us look like the characters from Spidey and His Amazing Friends.
This birthday was a lot of fun to throw together and we had a ton of fun taking family photos, per usual. Let us know if you have a Spider-Man themed birthday in your future!
