Ginger Shot

Hey you, we see you. Thanks for finding us. Right now, we are (by “we” I mean “the world”) going through something. We’re all feeling something: stressed, upset, anxious, isolated, and a million other emotions all at once. You’re not alone. No, really, we want you to know that. While we may not be able to enjoy the physical presence of our friends, family, and neighbors right now, we will get there. We want you to know that we are here for you and we will all get through this. Be strong. Stay safe. Stay home.

We like to keep things lite in this little cubby of the internet. Today is no different…

I am always on the search for smoothies and drinks that help fuel my body. I know I need to better, but I am lazy when it comes to eating a balanced meal and making sure I consume the proper nutrients. However, when it comes to feeding my son, he gets nothing but the best. His diet is 90% organic fruits, vegetables, and grains. But, why do moms neglect ourselves? I think that’s a question for another post. So as long as I take my multivitamins, drink water, and a healthy smoothie, I feel like I’m filling in my nutritional gap. Now that we’re in the middle of a global health crisis, I wanted to find something to help boost my immune system. That’s when I came across this ginger shot.

I am also guilty of not finishing my smoothies, so the fact that this ginger shot is, well a shot, sold me. The ingredients are all things I know for being a great source of nutrients: ginger, apple cider vinegar, honey, lemon, and orange juice, etc. The one ingredient that scared me was the fresh garlic. I don’t know, the idea of drinking raw garlic freaked me out. The first time I made this, I ended up blending the pulp but it caused foam. The next time I didn’t blend and to be honest, the garlic didn’t bother me.

Below are some of the benefits of each ingredient, found on 40 Aprons:

  • Honey is rich in antioxidants and is often used to soothe sore throats. It adds a natural sweetness to the drink.
  • Lemon juice is very high in vitamin C and can help to support heart and digestive health.
  • Orange juice is naturally high in vitamin C, folate and potassium, as well as being a great source of antioxidants.
  • Garlic is known to boost the function of the immune system, and in studies, it has been shown to reduce the symptoms of a common cold.
  • Ginger has a very long history of use in traditional and alternative medicine. It has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the common cold and other illnesses, to name a few. It also gives the immune booster shot a little zing.
  • Cayenne has many health benefits that is a result of the active component, capsaicin. It can boost metabolism and lower blood pressure.
  • Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
  • Black Pepper is used to activate the curcumin in the turmeric.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar can kill harmful bacteria.

While the photos in this post are ours, check out 40 Aprons for the full recipe! Please note, we substituted fresh orange juice with a ¼ cup of store-bought. We used fresh lemon juice the first few times, but then replaced that with a teaspoon of bottled lemon juice. In our opinion, the recipe was just as good.

Brian and I love this ginger shot. We’ve been taking it for the last few weeks about every 2-3 days. We have been doing our part with social distancing, working from home, and washing our hands (we’ve been washing our hands since the beginning of time). We don’t know how much we’re boosting our immune system, but at a minimum, it tastes great and is providing some much-needed nutrients. On the plus side, we didn’t have the leave the house for these ingredients (we know our pantry stock is abnormal). Stay safe!
