As fall comes to an end, there’s always room for more planting! Chrysanthemum, also known as mums, are the most popular flower to grow and bloom in the fall and caring for them is easy. I started a bunch of pots around the yard to prep for Brian and Fatima’s wedding. We’re trying to do a little more DIY with the flowers, so here’s to hoping they’ll be ready!
I started my mums from seeds and put some in growing pots and others in larger pots (for the wedding) where they will stay permanently. I placed the seeds in four ‘corners’ of the pot to get the most growth and look the fullest. Watering them weekly is a must, and be sure to have them exposed to a lot of sun. If you notice any blooms are dying pinch them off to encourage future blooms.
You can make your hardy mum last for next year if you take proper care of them as fall turns to winter. When your flowers die off as the weather turns colder, pinch off the top or even cut them down (I’ve done both). As spring arrives, you will see your mums turning green and eventually flourish in the next season. Mums come in an array of colors and shapes, so I always like to plant more to get a variety. If you’re invited to my brother’s wedding, you might see these mums throughout our venue!
