Supplies You’ll Need

Here’s what I used for my wreath:

Step 1: Build the Base

Depending on the type of wreath you chose, you might need to modify the wreath. As you’ll see in my video, I modified my 24″ wire wreath. Make those modifications now before you strong with lights.

If you’re adding fairy lights, now is the time to wrap them around the frame. Secure the battery pack to the base of the wreath with hot glue so it’s easy to switch on later. As you’re adhering the pack to the wreath, be mindful of access to the batteries and the on/off switch.

Step 2: Wrap with Cheesecloth

Cover the frame with a layer of cheesecloth to hide the wreath frame and the lights. This creates that soft, ghostly backdrop. You can also experiment with foam wreaths or other frames, but I stuck with my wire frame to stay within budget.

Step 3: Make the Ghosts

Attach the foam spheres to your wire wreath frame. Don’t space them out evenly (like numbers on a clock). Instead, mix up the spacing and heights for a more natural, spooky look. Secure the spheres with hot glue.

Cut squares or rectangles of cheesecloth large enough to drape over each sphere. I like the raw, ragged look that Pottery Barn uses, so I didn’t trim them too neatly. Drape the cheesecloth in layers over each sphere until you’re happy with the effect. Use fabric glue to stick the cheesecloth to the spheres. Use scissors and trim the cheesecloth as needed.

Step 4: Add the Eyes

Cut out small oval or pill-shaped eyes from the black felt. Using fabric glue, attach them to each ghost. This tiny detail really brings the wreath to life.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Once all your ghosts are in place, step back and admire your creation. Switch on the fairy lights for a haunting glow at night. The whole project took my about 3 hours or an autumn afternoon and makes the perfect spooky-season activity.

Final Thoughts

This wreath looks like it came straight out of a Pottery Barn catalog, but for half the price. It’s a fun, festive project that adds charm to your Halloween décor. Whether you hang it on your front door, above the mantle, or in your entryway, it’s sure to get compliments from every trick-or-treater.
