Since our snow day last week, we’ve been busy planning for Valentine’s Day! We love to craft in this house, so what better way to celebrate than with handmade cards? My kids and I love getting crafty for Valentine’s Day, and this year we’re making adorable “Love Bug” cards that are perfect for classmates, family, and friends. This easy craft is ideal for kids aged 5-10, and it’s a fun way to get them involved in the spirit of the holiday. Plus, who doesn’t love a cute ladybug?
These DIY Valentine’s Day cards are not only fun to make, but they’re also a special keepsake for the recipients. There’s something so heartwarming about receiving a handmade card, especially from a child. It shows you that they put thought and effort into it, and that’s something that store-bought cards just can’t replicate.

Let’s Get Crafty!
- Handprint Wings: Paint your child’s hands red and make handprints on white construction paper. You’ll need two handprints per bug. These will become the Love Bug’s wings! Let the handprints dry completely.
- Spotty Fun: Once the handprints are dry, add four black dots of paint to each handprint to resemble ladybug wings. Let these dry as well.
- Cut It Out: Carefully cut out all the handprints.
- Body Basics: Cut large circles from black construction paper for the bug bodies.
- Head Start: Cut smaller circles from the black foam sheet (or construction paper) for the bug heads. Make sure they’re big enough for the googly eyes.
- Assemble Your Bugs: On a colorful piece of construction paper (we used red and pink), glue the large black circle (body) to the center. Then, glue the smaller black circle (head) to the top of the body.
- Eye Spy: Glue googly eyes onto the bug’s head.
- Wing It: Glue the handprint wings to the bug’s body, positioning them so the thumbs point inwards.
- Antennae Action: Use the black marker to draw little antennae on the top of each bug’s head.
- Personalize Your Cards: Add a special message to the bottom of each card! My son wrote, “Happy Valentine’s Day! Love, Liam + Blair.” Get creative and let your kids personalize their cards with their own special messages.
Repeat these steps to create as many Love Bug Valentine’s Day cards as you need! We made a bunch, with my kids taking turns with different parts of the process. It was a great family activity!
