DIY Gift: Cookie Jar

Cookie Jar

A previous version of this post for DIY Cookie Jar was published in February 2013. We took new photos and adjusted the recipe.

Valentine’s Day (and the week leading up to it) gives us a sweet excuse to make delicious treats.  This DIY cookie jar is a perfect gift to hand out to your friends and loved ones.

Although Fatima and I would love to hand out jars of MarquisRitas, we thought it would be best to DIY up dry ingredients from one of our favorite recipes, Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Cookie Jar

For this DIY craft, you’re going to want to use a canning jar that’s 24oz.  Cut the recipe in half for smaller jars.  We used a 32oz canning jar and had extra room at the top…

Ingredients for the Jar:

  • 6 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 12oz package of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Fill the jar with the ingredients up above, in that same order (white sugar, brown sugar, flour, baking soda, salt, chocolate chips), allowing the chocolate chips to be at the top.
    1. Use a long utensil to push the brown sugar down before adding the flour to create a solid layer.
  2. Close the jar.
  3. Decorate as needed, include a card with remaining ingredients, and add a tag!

Remaining Ingredients & Directions:

  • 1 stick of butter (1/2 cup) at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips.
  3. In a large bowl or Kitchen Aid stand, beat butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until smooth (2 minutes).
  4. Add the egg and vanilla. Continue to stir until blended.
  5. Gradually add the flour/chocolate chip mixture and mix just until incorporated.
  6. Using a large ice cream scoop, drop the dough onto the baking sheets. We can fit about 6 large cookies on one sheet.
  7. Bake the cookies for about 10 minutes (+/-). The edges should be slightly browned.
  8. Once you take the cookies out of the oven, let cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes and then transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. You’ll get about 10-12 LARGE cookies.
