How to Make the Best Margarita Recipe

A margarita is all about balance—sweet, sour, and a little bit of salt to bring it all together. The classic margarita recipe is refreshingly simple. Here’s my simple take on a margarita, the Marquisrita (mar-key-rita).

Margarita on the Rocks Recipe

  • 1 shot of triple sec
  • 2 shots of tequila
  • ½ shot of lime juice
  • Optional: Simple syrup or agave for a touch of sweetness
  • Optional: Salted rim for extra flavor (I prefer salt-less rim, but I know a salted rim is classic)

Combine everything in a shaker with ice, shake well, and strain into a salt-rimmed glass over fresh ice. Want to make a big batch for a party? Just multiply the proportions and mix in a pitcher!

How Does a Margarita Taste?

A well-made margarita is a perfect balance of tangy lime, smooth tequila, and a hint of sweetness. The salt on the rim enhances the flavors, making every sip an irresistible mix of tart and sweet with a subtle kick. Whether you like yours bold and strong or light and refreshing, there’s a margarita variation for everyone.

Where Was the Margarita Invented?

Like many great cocktails, the origin of the margarita is a bit of a mystery. Some say it was created in Mexico in the 1930s or 1940s, while others claim a socialite in Texas mixed it up first. The most popular story credits a bartender in Tijuana who crafted the drink for a customer allergic to other spirits. No matter the true origin, one thing is clear—the margarita is here to stay!

Why Does a Margarita Have Salt?

Salt does more than just make your margarita look fancy—it actually enhances the flavors! The salt balances the tartness of the lime and the bitterness of the tequila, making each sip smoother and more enjoyable. If you’re not into a full salted rim, try a pinch of salt in the drink itself for the same effect.

Why Is a Margarita Glass Shaped Like That?

The iconic margarita glass—with its wide, shallow bowl—is designed to enhance the drinking experience. The shape allows the aromas to hit your senses first, making the flavors even more pronounced. Plus, the wide rim is perfect for holding that essential salt garnish!

Why Is National Margarita Day in February?

National Margarita Day falls on February 22, right when winter is in full swing. It’s the perfect time to bring a little warmth and tropical vibes into the season! There’s no answer as to why February 22nd, but Todd McCalla loved the cocktail so much, he created the “holiday.” In my opinion, the date was likely chosen to give people a fun, summery cocktail to enjoy as a break from the cold weather, making it a great excuse to dream of beach vacations while sipping on a margarita.

Alternatives to Triple Sec

Not a fan of triple sec? No problem! Here are some great alternatives:

  • Cointreau – A smoother, more refined orange liqueur
  • Grand Marnier – A richer, slightly cognac-infused choice
  • Orange Curaçao – A bolder, fruitier option
  • Fresh Orange Juice – A natural, non-alcoholic substitute

Each of these swaps will bring a unique twist to your margarita, so experiment and find your favorite!

What Is a Cadillac Margarita?

A Cadillac Margarita is a premium version of the classic margarita, made with top-shelf ingredients for a smoother, richer taste. Instead of regular triple sec, it features Grand Marnier, which adds depth and a hint of cognac. The tequila is typically a high-quality reposado or añejo, giving the drink a more complex flavor profile. It’s usually served on the rocks with a salted rim and often garnished with a lime wedge or an orange twist. If you’re looking for a more luxurious take on the margarita, the Cadillac Margarita is the way to go!

Best Margarita Glasses to Use

I use classic margarita glasses. My aunt and uncle gifted these to Fatima and I for our wedding. I love them. When I’m drinking from a classic margarita glass, I picture myself on top of the world. You don’t have to use these glasses, a regular short cocktail or water glass will do just fine. However, I’ve had my eyes on some of these more modern margarita glasses:
