Happy New Year! This year, Fatima and I were planning to stay in. Thank goodness we chose to do that because it was so cold outside. We came back from our holiday in New Hampshire a little early so we could be back home before New Year’s Eve. But what were we going to do?
New Year’s Eve Traditions
Every New Year’s Eve, before the festivities, we go out on a date. Whether it’s wine tasting and pizza making or tacos and margaritas, we make sure we spend a few hours together before heading out to a party. This year, we had a restaurant in mind, but after running errands in the morning and freezing our faces off, we decided to stay in. We ordered Chinese on Seamless, poured some wine, and made fried Oreos.
When the Chinese food arrived, albeit 45 minutes later than expected, the chicken did not look like the General Tso chicken we ordered. It wasn’t. Fatima ordered General Ching by accident. It was still fine, but we were looking to end 2017 on a high.
Netflix and Chill and fried Oreos.
More like Showtime on demand and warm up. While in New Hampshire, we started Ray Donovan from the beginning. We got hooked and continued to binge when we got home. However, right before switching to Showtime, we were watching Guy’s Grocery Games and they were frying food for a carnival theme. That got us in the mood to make fried Oreos. So, I threw on a few more layers and ran out to the store. Thank goodness I walked fast because I got there just before they closed.
When we order out, sometimes we get fried Oreos from this pizza place on the upper east side. They can be hit or miss, but when they’re good, they’re good. However, they always have way too much dough surrounding the Oreo. What I love about making fried Oreos at home, is the dough is much thinner. This makes it easier to eat at least five. It’s a very simple process. All you need is a “complete” pancake batter (where you just add water), hot vegetable oil, Oreos, and confectioners sugar.
[recipe title=”Fried Oreos” servings=”18-20 Fried Oreos” time=”15 mins” difficulty=”Easy” image=”https://liliesandloafers.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/IMG_5762.jpg”] [recipe-ingredients]- 1/2 a serving of ‘Complete’ Pancake mix (+ water or other ingredients it needs)
- 20 Oreos
- Vegetable oil
- Confectioner’s sugar (optional)
- Make 1/2 a serving of complete pancake mix according to the directions. We use Aunt Jemima complete buttermilk mix and it calls for 2 cups mix + 1.5 cups of water. So we used 1 cup mix and 3/4 cup of water. Whisk together until smooth. Make a whole batch of pancake mix if you are going to make 40+ Oreos.
- Fill a small pot up with oil about 1.5-2 inches from the bottom (Enough for the Oreos to float and not touch the bottom).
- Place on medium-high heat. If you have a thermometer, you want to heat the oil to about 300-315 degrees. If you don’t have one, no worries. Wait about 5-10 minutes and drop a little pancake mix in the pot to see what happens. If it starts to fry, then you’re good to go.
- Dip Oreos in the batter, covering the cookie on all sides, and place into the heated oil. They should start to fry immediately.
- The Oreos only need about 2 mins in the oil, about 1 minute on each side. Be sure to flip after a minute or when you see the sides turning golden brown.
- Once golden browned, place on a plate covered with a paper towel to let the excess oil fall off.
- Continue with remaining Oreos.
- Completely optional, but dust with confectioner’s sugar while they are hot.
- Wait 5-10 minutes before eating.
