This post on Huckleberry Lemonade was originally published in May 2015. Pictures and text have been updated. Basically, we gave this post an overhaul.
Once in a while, a delicious cocktail will inspire us on a journey to recreate it. Last year, we went to the Meatball shop right after its grand opening on the Upper East Side. There, Fatima had Huckleberry Tea: a combination of huckleberry vodka, iced tea, and fruit juice. When we asked our waitress how to make it, she said all you need is 44 North Huckleberry Vodka and lemonade. Who knew they even made Huckleberry-infused vodka!
Then I started to think, what does huckleberry taste like? What does it look like? I never had huckleberry until the meatball shop. Huckleberry-flavored vodka counts, right? otherwise, I still haven’t had huckleberry.
But what is huckleberry lemonade?
BEWARE: the vodka tastes nothing like vodka. While you get that vodka burn when you take a shot of this, you’d think you were drinking liquid candy. With a mixer, the vodka is non-existent. While the drink we had at the Meatball Shop was refreshing, we wanted to sweeten the deal. After calling a bunch of liquor stores in our area, I found one that not only sold Huckleberry Vodka but also had it in stock! This stuff is hard to find.
We played around with some lemonade-to-vodka proportions and I think we nailed a perfect balance. This is also stripped of unnecessary sugars. Simple syrup is great to liven up a cocktail, but we wanted this to be easy to make and only wanted to mix in essentials. The mint does a good job of bringing a refreshing element to the cocktail. The berries make a nice addition as a garnish, but feel free to squeeze or muddle them in the drink. We’ve done both, and either way, this huckleberry lemonade is very refreshing.
